Since 2008, Barnens hopp has been managing a family home in the Ukrainian city of Reni. The family home is called Novy Dom (New home) and is a home for children whose parents are considered temporarily uncapable to look after their children. Children are placed to Novy Dom by the social services and intention is that they stay for a limited period of time. Unfortunately, many of the parents do not succeed to change their situation and many children stay with us until they complete school. Our responsibility is though not over when they complete school or when they become adult: we then keep supporting the children who choose to go on with their studies, usually in another city as further education possibilities are very limited in Reni.
Most of the children who come to us come from dysfunctional families caused by alcohol or drug consumption. For us, it is very important to provide the children with a safe refuge during from difficult family environment as well as to equip them for their adult life so they will not follow their parents’ mistakes. More than a hundred children have lived in Novy Dom for a shorter or longer time before they leave us. We are proud to say that several of the children who stayed with us for a longer period of time successfully get out of the vicious circle of addiction and unemployment.
